Competition Format & Rules

It thrills us to know that we are educating a new generation of rock climbers! We love seeing the kids learn, think, and thrive. We want to continue being a fun and safe environment for new climbers and for the seasoned.

Rock climbing has inherent risk. We would like all parents, climbers, and coaches to be familiar with the gym rules and climber’s code of etiquette. Please take time to make sure you and your climber know what to expect.

Gym rules and etiquette

  • Remind climbers what it means to be a climber; practice safety, maturity, respect & awareness.
  • Encourage climbers to stay on route (same color)
  • Ask highwall climbers to say belay commands every time.
  • Make sure the harnesses are tightened on waists and the black harnesses are double backed.
  • Remind boulderers to be respectful of other climbers around them, and to take turns.
  • Non-climbers should stay clear of all climbing areas.

Highwall Gym Rules

  • Belayers must be certified by a staff member to belay.
  • Be aware of others; look around the corner and up auto – belays for descending climbers.
  • Walk while in the climbing area
  • Always walk behind belayers.
  • Do not use metal D rings as hand or foot holds. Serious injury can occur.
  • Food and drink must stay in the lobby or concrete areas.
  • The Ascent is a place to learn and grow. Encourage others while taking turns.

Boulder Gym Rules

Land properly when falling; be aware of height, obstacles, and body angle risks when falling and climbing.

  • Look down and around before coming off the wall.
  • Walk behind other climbers and wait your turn for a climbing area.
  • Stay out of fall zones of climbers, especially when walking around corners and under the arches.
